Rebel Underground's "No Need (To Find Myself)"

Forged in the fires of Melbourne’s anti-neoliberal resistance, born of brotherly love and musical synchronicity, Rebel Underground is the new project from local dissidents Greg Ng (aka Soul Train, formerly of Snout) and Andy Papadopoulos (Anthems to the Fall).

baby — baby — it’s going to be alright

Rebel Underground brings us their new album, No Need (To Find Myself). The sun that graces the cover is the perfect image for this record—its pop-inflected brightness sits in tension with a gritty undercurrent of protest and defiance. This is music that gleams on the surface but burns underneath. The Rebel Underground project is spearheaded by Greg Ng (Snout) and Andy Papadopoulos (Anthems to the Fall). Ng writes of the album:

“This album is a love letter. First and foremost, to the people I love; all of whom contributed immensely to its creation. It’s a love letter to rock and roll, which still saves my soul—to guitars and bass, and most importantly, to drums. To hip hop and R&B, to punk rock and folk, to reggae music and house music, which will never die, to Soul and Gospel and techno and Disco, which never sucked.

To tinkering with plastic boxes, cobblign together amateur sequences and pressing record/play. To drum machines and the elders who taught me how to use them. To the Technics SL1200 and to HiWatt, to sixites and seventies Fenders that defy eq-ing. To kelpies and collies and work dogs, to blazing nights out and to living quietly with my dog at my side.”

“No Need (To Find Myself)” is out now on all major streaming platforms.
